Bangkok in 48 hours: the essentials without the stress
Wat Pho at sunrise, a boat trip on the Chao Phraya, street food in Chinatown, and a rooftop bar with skyline views. My favorite itinerary for those who only have two days in the capital.
Bangkok greets you with heat, noise, neon lights, and the scent of lemongrass. It’s exhausting and wonderful at the same time. If you only have two days, don’t try to see everything—choose three or four experiences and savor them at a leisurely pace. This is the route I’ve been recommending for years.
Day 1 · Temples, river and sunset
06:30 · Wat Pho before the buses
Start early. Wat Pho opens at 8:00, so have a light breakfast and be among the first in. You’ll see the 46-meter Reclining Buddha almost alone, with the golden light of dawn streaming through the windows. It’s one of those moments that stays with you for years.
Esme’s tip: shoulders and knees covered. If you’re caught off guard, you can rent sarongs for 50 baht at the entrance.
09:30 · Cross the river to Wat Arun
For just 5 baht you can cross the Chao Phraya River by boat and emerge in front of the Temple of Dawn. Climb the central tower and watch Bangkok awaken on the opposite bank. It’s magical.
“Bangkok cannot be understood from the ground. It is understood from the river — that is why I always take my travelers to a boat rather than to another temple.”
